The winner of this year’s Golden Bear at the Berlinale, THERE IS NO EVIL is yet another example of Mohammad Rasoulof’s cinema of humanistic defiance. A collection of four stories all related by a single theme – the place of capital punishment within Iran’s Islamic Republic – the film examines how this problem cuts across various strata of society. The first vignette finds Rasoulof adopting a style somewhat reminiscent of Asghar Farhadi, as he ofers a portrait of the hangman as a middle-class family man, beset by perfectly ordinary problems. From there, we are asked to consider the very particular problem of compulsory military service which, in Iran, can sometimes mean serving as a state executioner. THERE IS NO EVIL is a stark, agenda-driven film, but no less stirring for its blunt polemics. If Iranian cinema has traditionally conveyed its messages through symbolism and allegory, Rasoulof opts for the simplicity of the fable here instead. As the title suggests, THERE IS NO EVIL demands a reconsideration of the moral certainties that undergird a theocratic state. (Michael Sicinski- Viennale)

Iran, de nos jours. Heshmat est un mari et un père exemplaire mais nul ne sait où il va tous les matins. Pouya, jeune conscrit, ne peut se résoudre à tuer un homme comme on lui ordonne de le faire. Javad, venu demander sa bien-aimée en mariage, est soudain prisonnier d’un dilemme cornélien. Bharam, médecin interdit d’exercer, a enfin décidé de révéler à sa nièce le secret de toute une vie. Ces quatre récits sont inexorablement liés. Dans un régime despotique où la peine de mort existe encore, des hommes et des femmes se battent pour affirmer leur liberté.

Heshmat ist ein vorbildlicher Ehemann und Vater, jeden Morgen bricht er sehr früh zur Arbeit auf. Wohin fährt er? Pouya kann sich nicht vorstellen, einen anderen Menschen zu töten, trotzdem bekommt er den Befehl. Kann es einen Ausweg für ihn geben? Javad besucht seine Freundin Nana um ihr einen Heiratsantrag zu machen. Doch dieser Tag hält für beide noch eine andere Überraschung bereit. Bahram ist Arzt, darf aber nicht praktizieren. Als ihn seine Nichte Darya aus Deutschland besucht, beschließt er, ihr den Grund für sein Außenseiterdasein zu offenbaren.
